How do I format a Word manuscript for clean EPUB conversion?

A tidy Word (DOCX) file converts into a beautiful EPUB. A messy one converts into a messy EPUB. These habits make conversion clean.

Do this

Use real heading styles. Mark each chapter title as Heading 1 (Word's style, not just big bold text). This is what builds your clickable table of contents — see clickable table of contents.
One body style for normal paragraphs. Let the style handle indents and spacing.
Page break between chapters (Insert → Page Break), not a row of empty paragraphs.
Centre with the alignment button, not spaces or tabs.

Avoid this

Manual line breaks to "space things out."
Tabs or spaces to create indents.
Text boxes, columns, or fancy layout — they do not reflow.
Images pasted at low resolution.
