How ebook royalties work
When a store sells your ebook, it keeps a share and pays you the rest. Most stores pay roughly 70% of your list price in their main price band. Amazon Kindle is the notable exception: it pays 70% only between $2.99 and $9.99, and 35% outside that range — which is why so many authors price inside the band.
On top of the store's share, a distributor may take a commission. With Chiify you keep 100% on any paid plan (the free plan keeps 10%). These numbers are estimates — exact rates vary by store, territory, price, and VAT.
Frequently asked questions
How are ebook royalties calculated?
Each store pays you a percentage of your list price. Most stores pay around 70% in the main price band; Amazon Kindle pays 70% between $2.99 and $9.99 and 35% outside that range. Your distributor or platform may then take a commission — Chiify takes 0% on paid plans.
Why does Amazon pay 35% on some prices?
Amazon's 70% royalty only applies to ebooks priced from $2.99 to $9.99. Below $2.99 or above $9.99, the rate drops to 35%, which is why many authors price inside the 70% band.
