How to take a book down from sale
Permanently or temporarily removing your book from retailers.
Last updated 2026-06-06
You can take a book down at any time. Reasons authors do this:
- Pulling for revision (you found typos or want to update content).
- Switching aggregators (you're moving to a different distributor).
- Killing a book (it's not selling and you want to focus elsewhere).
- Rights reversion (a publisher took the rights back).
Steps to take down
- From your Library, click the book.
- Click Take down in the top right.
- Choose Take down everywhere or Take down from specific retailers.
- Confirm.
Timing — how long does it take?
Retailer takedowns are NOT instant. They take:
- Amazon Kindle: 24–48 hours
- Apple Books: 3–5 days
- Kobo: same week, usually 2–3 days
- Google Play: 5–7 days
- OverDrive: 7–14 days (libraries notify subscribers)
- All others: 1–14 days
The book stays buyable on each retailer until that retailer processes the takedown. You'll see live status per retailer on the book's page.
Restoring a taken-down book
You can re-publish a taken-down book later. From the book's page, click Re-publish. Same restrictions apply — retailer go-live times of 1–7 days.
Important: if a book has been off sale for more than 90 days, the original retailer URL may not return when you re-publish. The book gets a fresh URL. This affects your existing marketing links and any reviews tied to the old URL.
If you're moving to another aggregator
Don't publish on the new aggregator until ALL retailers confirm the Chiify takedown. Publishing into a still-live listing causes retailers to reject your new feed for "duplicate ISBN" — and they remember this for months.
Safe order:
- Take down on Chiify.
- Wait 2 weeks for full retailer propagation.
- Watch your Chiify dashboard for "Removed from sale" status on every retailer.
- Then publish via the new aggregator.
Permanently deleting a book
Taking down removes the book from sale but keeps it in your Chiify Library (so you can re-publish later). To permanently delete, click the book → Settings → Delete book permanently. This:
- Removes the book from retailers (same takedown timeline).
- Erases all metadata, manuscript, and cover files from our servers.
- Cannot be undone.
We keep sales records (you earned this money, after all) but the book entry itself is gone.
