I keep the grid up for a living. So when six counties went dark in a heat wave, I knew it wasn't a transformer. I went home to a powerless building and found the three men from the basement workshop already on it. Ozan, who has a radio rig built for the end of the world. Ilya, who decodes encrypted signals and refuses to say how he learned. Matty, whose hands can move current through dead copper and who can't explain what he is. We're not a team. We're not even nice to each other. We're the only four people in the region who know this blackout was planned. So we're working out of a windowless basement with flashlights and cold coffee, and I'm finding out that the men I don't trust are the only ones I can count on. The lights are coming back on. I just don't know what I'll do when they do.
