The Winger's Obsession

The Winger's Obsession

A Runaway Bride, Grumpy-Sunshine Pairing Hockey Romance

by Devyn Frost

*You're bleeding through the tape.* Caleb Hawthorn looks down at his left hand. The white trainer's tape has gone pink at the second joint, blooming slowly while he answered the same three questions. A win, a goal, two assists, somebody's skate blade across his knuckles in a second-period scrum. That is the injury people can see. The other one started behind his right eye during the second intermission and by the final buzzer has turned the overhead lights into ice picks. He tells Dr. Cho he will come back in ten minutes and walks to the press conference instead. Three rows back, a woman stands up with a notebook in one hand and a question she decided on before she got to her feet. Two missed morning skates in ten days, logged as maintenance days, with nothing on the injury report. A hit from Bouchard in Vancouver that he was slow getting up from. Three sources who say he has been in Dr. Cho's office more than usual. *I'm thirty-one. Some mornings my back says no. That's the maintenance.* The real answer is his sister. Maya is on dialysis three times a week. She has been on the transplant list for two years. Her insurance is tied to his contract, and if he stops playing she loses coverage. So Caleb counts games instead of symptoms, and Lila Marchetti ends up holding the biggest sports story of the year: an anonymous tip telling her to follow his headaches, a slurred sentence in a hospital bathroom, pupils that do not match. Her father told her once she would never make it. She could settle that with one story. Around them: a captain who has watched a hundred reporters promise they were different and who gives Caleb one week to come clean before he goes to the general manager himself. A media relations director with Caleb's name circled in red in a file. A teammate who saw something in the locker room and may or may not want an angle. And eventually a white ceiling tile with a water stain blooming in the corner, floaters drifting across a field of vision that will not settle, and a doctor pulling a chair to the bedside to explain what a subdural hematoma is and how long it had been growing. A hockey romance about an undisclosed injury, a sister who needs a brother to keep skating, and a reporter deciding whether she follows the story or the person. The romance is closed-door.
