The Widow He Bought

Lena Vetrova learned to be a Bratva wife in eleven years of marriage to the wrong brother. She learns to be a widow in one afternoon. When Yuri is shot at his own table, the family assesses his debts and offers the customary solution: the widow goes to whoever pays. Ilya Agapov, the family's quiet money man, pays in full before the body is cold and moves her into the top floor of his tower. He tells her the marriage certificate is a formality. He tells her nothing else. What Ilya will not say is that Yuri had been selling family routes for six years, that Lena is the only person alive who can be blamed for it, and that marrying her was the only legal reason for a tribunal to spare her life. He plans to keep the truth in his ledger and the woman upstairs. Lena has other plans — and a shipping manifest Yuri never meant anyone to read.
