Nine years ago she walked out and let this town call her a cheat.

And she let the club call it another man, because a town will build a reason whether you give them one or not, and a cheat is survivable and a cooperator is not.

He does not care what she did. He cares that she left without a note.

Nine years, one empty kitchen table, and a piece of lined paper with a single letter on it that she has kept in a frame by the door ever since — because she started to write it, and stopped.

Now the whole county is about to read the truth, the man who ruined his arm is sitting on the docket, and the only two people who can put this right are the two who broke it.
