The Quiet Husband

Halle Brandt left her husband on a Sunday morning. Anders is a quiet man. He does not call. He does not text. He does not show up. For three weeks Halle almost believes the divorce will be that simple. Then her umbrella is on the wrong hook. Her charger is in a drawer she never used. Her landlord tells her Anders returned her spare key weeks ago. Halle assumes she is losing track of her own life — until a woman from Anders's office calls and asks whether Halle knows where he was the night her sister disappeared. The storage unit is in Anders's name. Inside are folders of mail that belongs to her neighbors, a set of keys she does not recognize, and a notebook in her own handwriting that she has no memory of writing. Halle will bring it to the police. She will not get her memory back. She will get a therapist, a new lock, and a single line at the bottom of the last page.
