The Patient Wife

Dorothy Kestrel is a widow of eleven weeks when the motorcycle club her husband used to fix bikes for sends over a box of his things. Inside is a phone she's never seen. One saved contact under a name she doesn't recognize. And four years of location data — every address, every shift, every walk home. All of it hers. Someone has been tracking Dorothy since before her husband died. That someone is Lev Arnaud, the club's mechanic, fifty-six years old, who has loved her at a distance for six years because she belonged to his friend. When the friend died, Lev kept the tracker on. He tells himself it was to make sure she got home. Dorothy Kestrel has spent twenty years sitting with the dying. She can read a lie in three seconds. She lets him in. She makes him tell her everything. Then she tells him what she has been doing all this time while he watched — and it isn't running.
