The No-Yell Household

Stop Yelling and Get Cooperation — Calm Discipline for Parents Who Have Tried Everything, Ages 2 to 12

by Elise Norwood

You did it again this morning. Over shoes.

You asked once. Nothing. You asked again. Nothing. You said their name in that particular way, and then you did the fourth one, and the shoes went on, and you spent the drive to school feeling like the wrong kind of parent.

You have already tried the obvious thing, which is deciding to stop. It lasted about a fortnight.

Here is why. Yelling is not emotion leaking out of you. It is your household’s enforcement mechanism, the thing that makes something actually happen, and it got that job because nothing else in your house does anything. Your child is not defying you. They have learned, across several hundred repetitions, exactly which point in the sequence is the one where acting becomes necessary, and everything before it is weather.

Which means you cannot simply stop. Take the volume away and you have removed the only working part of the system. That is why resolving to be calmer fails, every time, and it has nothing to do with your character.

What works is giving the job to something else.

•   The one question that tells you where you stand: if you don’t raise your voice, what actually happens?

•   How to find the live rung in your own house, in a single day

•   The change that replaces volume, and why it works while you are still irritated

•   The hour before, where most of the outcome is already decided

•   How to ask so that once is enough, and the three instructions worth abolishing

•   What to do at the exact moment your child says no

•   Your own way out, planned in advance, for the evenings you are not going to make it

•   The thirty seconds afterwards, on the occasions you did not

It is also blunt about what this genre gets wrong. It will not tell you that you have damaged your child, because nobody can honestly tell you that. It will not promise you will never shout again. And it takes seriously the possibility that what you need is not a technique at all.

Not calmer. Just no longer necessary.
