The Living Room Bible Dictionary

Plain-Language Meanings for Every Word You'll Meet in Scripture

by Caleb Whitmore

You are reading your Bible. You hit a word you have seen a hundred times and never quite pinned down. Maybe it is covenant. Maybe it is propitiation, or eunuch, or selah. You do not want a lecture from a seminary. You want to know what the word means, where it shows up, and why it matters for the page in front of you. That is the whole job of this book. The Living Room Bible Dictionary is written for ordinary people reading Scripture at home.

Every entry gives you the same four things, in the same order, so you always know where to look:

1. The plain meaning — one clear sentence, in the English you actually speak.

2. Where you'll meet it — a real book and chapter, so you can turn straight there. 3. Why it matters in your reading — what changes once you know the word. 4. Where the word comes from — the Hebrew or Greek in English letters, with a friendly respelling, so you can say it out loud at church without flinching. What is inside • Thousands of entries, A to Z in one alphabet — people, places, objects, practices, themes, and the theological words that carry the whole story • Every entry names a book and chapter, so the dictionary stays open beside your Bible • Pronunciation guides for the hard names, because almost no Bible dictionary gives you these • A grey "Where Christians differ" panel on the contested words — baptism, predestination, the millennium, the gifts of the Spirit. It describes the main views fairly, labels which are majority and which are minority, and then stops. This dictionary does not settle those questions for you • Reading Trails — six guided routes through the book, so you can read it rather than only look things up • A Scripture Index — find the passage you are reading and see every word that throws light on it • Hebrew and Greek word lists in plain English letters, plus tables converting cubits, shekels and baths into measurements you recognise Written for the living room, not the lecture hall Most Bible dictionaries were built for students. They are excellent, and they are heavy. This one is built for the person on the sofa with a Bible open and a question in mind. Sentences are short. Jargon is explained or left out. Nothing assumes you have studied Greek, and nothing talks down to you. The other difference is honesty about disagreement. Some words in Scripture are contested. This book tells you so, in plain language, without pretending the argument does not exist and without taking a side it has no business taking. Who it is for • Anyone who has ever skipped a word in their Bible reading • New believers who want to understand what they are reading • Long-time readers who want the plain sense of words they have nodded past for years • Small groups, Sunday school classes, and families reading together • Anyone who wants a reference book they can actually read Keep it beside your Bible. The next time a word stops you, the answer will be one page away.
