The Knife of Memory

Six years ago Dr. Ines Haddad testified against a man who sold missiles to a country the United States was not at war with. She was right. He spent four years in a federal facility and two more on appeal. Now his company is publicly traded and worth eleven billion dollars, and Ines's cat is missing. Then her mail. Then a photocopy of her own prison intake paperwork, in her own handwriting, appears on her desk with a note in the margins. The Bureau sends a protection detail. The man who runs it spent two tours as Vane's overseas security contractor, and Ines cannot decide whether he is guarding her or studying her. She starts keeping a file on him. She is going to need it.
