Margo Cobb spent her entire savings on a condemned Victorian and a plan to open an inn before the first snow. Her neighbor is Owen Pike, a landscaper who has quietly tended the property's garden for four years and does not intend to watch her pave it. They agree to a truce. She keeps the house. He keeps the garden. Neither of them mentions the fence. As the porch is rebuilt and the stained glass restored, Margo finds a diary in the attic belonging to Owen's grandmother, and starts reading it without telling him.
