The Goalie's Vow
An Old Flame, Betrayal Hockey Romance
by Devyn Frost
His father's hands go still on a green bleacher seat in the middle of a playoff game, and the son who finds him is seventeen years old and holding a blue Gatorade he carried up between periods.
The arena does not stop the game. There are scouts in the building. The paramedics take seven minutes to arrive, and he counts them.
In a hospital room afterwards he makes a promise to a man who cannot hear it. *I'm gonna win the Stanley Cup.* He will bring it back to Port Mercy and put it where his father can see it. *I'll win it for you, Dad.*
Now Liam Finch is the starting goalie for the Port Mercy Hawks, down two games to nothing in the first round and facing elimination, and his mother is at Silver Bay Assisted Living, where the night nurse texts to say she did not understand why he couldn't come now.
With fifteen minutes to puck drop, his coach tells him there is a woman in the hallway who will not leave, and that it is about his father.
Maya Chandra is the psychologist the front office brought in two weeks ago and Liam has been refusing to call back. She is a foot shorter than he is, she does not blink, and she wears a silver ring on her thumb that is plainly not hers. She holds out a folded sheet of plain white printer paper with three lines on it.
*I know about the vow. I'm not here to break it. But I need you to trust me. Your father didn't die the way they told you.*
He lets in three goals on eleven shots in the first period.
What Maya has found in the medical records are deleted nursing notes and an altered time of death. What she has not told him is why she can recognize a doctored file on sight, or whose ring she spins when she is afraid, or why the woman who owns this team has already started making calls about her past.
This is a contemporary hockey romance about grief that has hardened into a promise, a man who organized an entire career around keeping it, and two people who both failed to ask the right question while there was still time to ask it. The romance is closed-door.
