The Enforcer She Married

Ten years ago, Nadia Barrera married Mateo Rios in a Las Vegas courthouse and left his ring on a gas station counter outside Barstow. She had just watched him do his job. He was twenty-four. She was nineteen. She has spent a decade not using the last name he gave her. Now she audits money trails for the state of Nevada, and the file on her desk ends at a company called the Rios Group — with her signature on a joint filing she never signed. Mateo finds her before she finishes reading. He brings the divorce papers he never filed and makes one request: let him clean up the trail before her audit burns the only family he has. Nadia makes a counter-offer. She wants the file. Ten weeks on US-95, a rental car, a gun in the glove box, and a man she used to love explaining his whole life in ninety-mile stretches. His family finds out. He picks a side. Ten years to the day, same courthouse, both of them signing something that isn't a divorce.
