The Captain's Quiet Season

Hazel Munro has taken four thousand photographs of the same hockey team and one hundred and twelve of Boone Vance, and if anyone asked her why, she would lie. He's the captain, he's been her best friend for two seasons, and he's graduating in June with a contract somewhere she isn't. When her apartment falls through the same week his roommate leaves, the obvious solution gets a chore chart, a thermostat rule, and one joke neither of them laughs at. Now they share a hallway, a coffee maker, and a season that's running out. He leaves pucks on her desk with the dates on them. She pretends she's not keeping them. The draft is in April, and Boone Vance has never said a thing he didn't mean — so the only question is whether he'll finally say it before June.
