Tail Lights in the Badlands

Inez Delgado rode into the Badlands at two in the morning on a motorcycle that was not hers, with a duffel bag that was not hers, looking for the three men whose founder she buried six weeks ago. Vin runs the pumps. Rett keeps the books, such as they are. Duane keeps the peace with his fists. They have been holding the Silver Kings together since the old man died, and they are not holding it well. Inez watched him die. She knows who took the body. She knows what the money was for. She has not told them the whole of it, and the part she has not told them will cost her all three of them if she does it wrong. Somebody is coming for the station. Somebody always is. But this time the Kings have a nurse, a bag of cash, and a woman who does not scare easy. She is not going to run. Neither are they.
