Sanctuary Run

Rennie Voll is thirteen days out of a place she doesn't name, wearing three shirts in a blackout, when she walks into the Rook River Riders' bar and asks for a job she has no idea how to do. Dell Kovacs runs the road for the chapter and doesn't take in strays. He takes her in anyway. Four months of bar shifts and careful distance later, she asks him for something else, and he says yes in a way that makes the whole year before it feel like a rumor. When the bar back counts her aspirin bottles and grins, she knows what will happen next — a club, a search party, a man with a following. She leaves before the vote. She spends two years learning what she is worth and a folder's worth of evidence learning what he's done. Her son is two, has Dell's hands, and calls the gas station by the exit sign their living room. When Dell finally pulls in, he doesn't ask her to explain. He asks her to sign the paperwork.
