Ravening the House

Thalia Ravenwood buried her husband, left the country, and came back a year later to a house that had acquired a tenant. Bram Kestrel is a scholar. He is in the west wing. He is not on any lease, in any record, or in anyone's memory of this house before the year Thalia's husband died. He says he owes her husband his life. He says he is keeping a promise. He is also standing in every room before she gets there. When Thalia finds the debt written into the estate's papers — blood, collateral, a promise that cannot be inherited and cannot be undone — she realises the house was never hers. It was always his cage. So she does the one thing her husband never thought to do. She sets him free, in writing, in front of witnesses. And he stays anyway.
