Mira

In my family I made coffee. I signed for deliveries. I was there, which is not the same as being seen. Then a Pakhan died in Brighton Beach and the Koskins needed a daughter to lend to the Aslanov name. My sister was already married. My brother is in Miami. Which left Mira. Arsen Aslanov buried a fiancée in 2016 and has not said her name since. He keeps a locked office in Manhattan and a mother in a facility in New Jersey who doesn't recognize him. He is correct with me to the point of pain. He is not cruel. He is not anything yet. Three months in, I was pregnant and had a plan, a savings account, and a clinic appointment I didn't keep. When I finally told him, in a car in the Lincoln Tunnel, he said: I know. A forced marriage, secret baby mafia romance for readers who like their quiet books loud underneath.
