I knew three days before the fire and I let it burn. That is the shape of what I did to Naomi, and no amount of the truth I told afterward, which was not much and not soon, could bend that line back straight.

The money, the name, the protection, the gun, the whole shadow-crown I bled for, until I was standing in her yard with empty hands and a daughter who did not know me and no reason on earth she should choose me except the true one.
