His Quiet Ward

Lena Ashby spent five years losing her mother slowly. She takes a job in a Vermont farmhouse to get some distance from that, and finds a man who hasn't left his own porch in six years. Felix Ardant is fifty-two, a war photographer who took one photograph — one — and then put his cameras in a trunk. She was hired to take care of him. She was also, he knows, hired for reasons he can't explain to her yet. When she finds the photographs in the attic, she doesn't run. She sits with him on the floor for six hours. Then she makes a phone call that neither of them can take back. An age gap dark captive romance about a debt two families carried for thirty years — and the woman who finally closed it.
