Her Cold-Hearted Don

Alessia Moreau is a forensic psychologist who gets paid by the Provincial Court to interview men like Elias Dragan. He runs guns through the Port of Montreal; his file is six inches thick and empty of anything usable. She is assigned to evaluate him for a hearing she knows is going to be rigged. He is assigned to her. What he actually wants is not a competent assessment. He wants to talk to someone who isn't on his payroll. When his lawyers fail to keep him in custody, he has her brought to a house on the South Shore — not kidnapped, exactly. Her rent has been paid. Her loans have disappeared. Her caseload has been reassigned. She arrives to confront him and stays because the alternative is worse. He shows her the ledgers, because it's the only way he knows how to tell the truth. She doesn't believe him for two weeks. Then she does. By the time she understands, she's the Crown's expert witness and the only person in Quebec who can prove the Crown is lying.
