Her Careful Landlord

Louisa Merrick has nothing left but a room in Marylebone and a landlord who never raises the rent. Mr. Vane is thoughtful. He fixes what's broken before she mentions it. He knows when she is home. He has a key to every door in the house, and he uses them. When the maid in the room above vanishes overnight, the police take Mr. Vane's word over Louisa's. So Louisa starts a ledger of her own — every moved latch, every slit envelope, every teaspoon that comes back from his kitchen washed. She is going to prove what kind of man he is. She just has to stay his tenant, and stay calm, long enough to do it.
