Five Men, One Fate

A hand-laid rope is five strands worked around a heart yarn, and if you cut the heart, the five that are left have to each take the load true or the whole line renders and lets go under strain. I know this the way I know my own hands, because laying rope is the trade my father taught me before the sea took him, and it is the only thing in Almond Mill that has never once lied to me.

I came back to a dying harbor town to bury a grief, not to fall in love. I certainly did not come back to fall in love with five men at once. But they were the ones who came home from the wreck that took my father, five men who were supposed to be six, and every one of them has been carrying the weight of that night the way I carry a bad line, feeling for the place it is about to part.
