Captain of Steel

The state pays Laney Pruitt to find the fatally weak places in bridges. She has found one at Pier 9. Vito Marchetti is told to make the report disappear. He was a captain once, in a different uniform, in a different country. He reads the report twice. What he does instead is hire the engineers himself, move Laney under his roof, and start asking who in his own family paid to have a headstock poured wrong. Someone with a vote and a boat wants this terminal sold, and a forty-year-old inspection is the easiest way to force it. They will not burn the evidence while Vito is holding it. So Vito does the thing you don't do. He takes forty years of port records into a federal building and says his own name first. Laney signs the bridge off five years later. She signs his name off too, on the record, in front of the engineers who said the load would never hold.
