Ash and Apples

Ash Calder fixes bikes by day and runs errands for the Hellier Motorcycle Club by night. He was turned two years ago by a woman who got bored. He knows what he is. He keeps his teeth to himself and his hands on the wrenches. Apples Tompkins runs the diner the club calls neutral ground. She's known what Ash is for a year. They've got an arrangement: they don't say it out loud. Then a coastal club rolls into town and starts bleeding the drivers dry, and the Helliers give Ash two weeks to fix it, because he's the only member who can walk out of a bullet. Apples offers him her wrist at closing time so he doesn't have to hunt. Someone sees. They take her. They burn her diner down to the slab. Now Ash is riding through two roadblocks and a locked gate with everything he has left, and the one thing he will not do is stop.
