Watch the Orphan

Auden Marsh runs the Corso family's Bellhollow surveillance desk out of a rented office above a bagel shop — six screens, three night shifters, one boring assignment at a time. The new subject is a freshman named Solomon Reyes, an adopted kid with a Corso bloodline nobody acknowledges and a scholarship paid for in cash. For four weeks Solomon does nothing worth logging. Then he stops coming home, and the family's rivals start asking about him, and Auden discovers the family never actually knew Solomon existed. He was tracked, not known. Auden takes Solomon off the board himself and puts him in a safehouse under a fake name. Solomon, who has been aware he was watched for a month, reads Auden's name out of his own file on the second night. Together they follow the paperwork back to the person who filed Solomon's life as an asset — and the only way out is the one Auden has refused to consider until now.
