Vow of the Hollow Crown

Beatriz Alcantara left the Serra da Estrela at eighteen and came back at thirty-three to bury her grandmother and sell the land. She found a marriage contract in her grandmother's desk, dated the day Beatriz was born, binding her to Rafael Lazaro, eldest son of a family no one in the village will discuss. The lawyer tells her the mountain can't be sold without the Lázaros' consent. The consent is Beatriz. She stays the summer instead, cataloguing her grandmother's library, finding letters from 1902 that describe a wedding night Beatriz was never told about. She meets Rafael, who is quiet, tired, and not at all what the contract implies. The pack on the mountain is dying out. Rafael is the last of them. By the end of August, Beatriz has written her own terms on the back of the contract in her own hand. She keeps her work. She keeps the mountain. And on the last night of summer, in a stone barn, with the letters burning in the stove, she becomes the thing her family has been paying for two hundred years.
