Traded to the Turned Colonel

When the peacekeeping mission in the Caucasus collapses, translator Nadia Kerim is offered a trade: one civilian for eight detained soldiers. She says yes before anyone can order her to. The man on the other side of the handover is Colonel Bastien Roux — turned, formal, and the only person holding the road out. He gives her a room instead of a cell, and a problem instead of a captor. Something on the far side of that road has been eating every human column that crosses it. The eight soldiers are on the wrong side of it. Nadia is the only person who speaks both sides. Over a season she negotiates the crossing, refuses to be useful in ways she didn't choose, and finds the first place in years that doesn't need her to be someone else. When exfil is finally arranged, she stands at the crossing and waves the eight of them home — and stays.
