The Wolf of Vinegar Hill

In Vinegar Hill the ledgers outlive the men who keep them. Nunzia Sarno buried her husband two years ago and has been running the family's books ever since. When her brother-in-law is shot in his car outside the office, she has forty-eight hours to replace him before the families across the river start doing arithmetic about the Sarno name. The only man who can keep the books is Matteo Rinaldi, who has been quietly underreporting for a decade to keep his own hands clean — and who Nunzia's husband accused her of sleeping with the week before he died. She hires him anyway. The cousin who has been skimming the family for ten years does not expect a widow with a ledger and a man who counts for a living to find him. He's wrong. There are no weddings in this family. There are only the books, and the people whose names are in them, and the ones who get crossed out. When it's done, the ledger has two names at the top. One of them is mine.
