The Warden of Sorrows

Twenty years at the gate have taught Vesper Wren one rule: a Warden of Sorrows must not feel. Feeling breaks the ward. A broken ward looses the dead. Then a wounded knight arrives at her gate carrying a name she has written in her diary every night since she was a girl. Ash Kettering is her fated mate — and the ash-lands have been hunting him for twenty years specifically to reach her. Through three sieges they hold the gate together, and each night the bond between them grows teeth. When Vesper falls on the fourth siege, Ash breaks the oldest law of the order to keep her. To save him in turn, she will have to leave the gate she has guarded her whole life — and open it. Some gates are meant to be walked through.
