The Warden He Drowned

Two wardens now keep the double locks of Ondsfeld: one living, one dead. Ilse has been drowned for two centuries and runs her office under the river with strict procedure and clean hours. Tarin is a retired harbour-pilot who once let a rope go slack during a rescue, and the man lost was his brother. Ilse learns this from the old lock-office records, because the drowned quarter keeps its own books. She does not charge him. She asks him for testimony — because the nine hundred dead have a right to hear their own history from the surface mouth that made it. He gives it, in open session, over two days, to witnesses who do not speak. There is no punishment at the bottom of the river. There is a ledger, and a colleague, and years of work. A sweeping, quiet epic of two wardens and the books that keep the dead.
