The Treasurer Took Her First

Odessa Pryor has run the Route 62 diner since her mother got sick, and she has never let a man past the cash register — not once in twenty-seven years. When Ellis Marsh walks back into eastern Ohio as the Skeleton's Wrath treasurer, she sees the boy who broke her heart and the man who might still fix it. She gives him the back booth and, three months later, the apartment upstairs. He leaves her bed at 2 a.m. to take a phone call. By sunrise a deputy has texted her a photograph: Ellis in a Toledo motel with the club president's wife. Dess sells the diner to the cook and takes a job in Erie, Pennsylvania. Sixteen months later, the club is under federal audit, and Ellis walks into the Erie diner with a bag of ledgers and a story about a wire drop, a handler, and a deputy who was on the payroll. Dess believes him. She still isn't marrying him. She gives him terms: finish his testimony, do his time, come back to a diner that closes at nine. Sunday nights are the only thing they get. She never wears the ring.
