The Silent Bodyguard

Calder Vane was hired to keep me alive. He was also, according to a piece of paper neither of us signed willingly, my stepbrother. Six years he stood in the corners of my father's photographs, silent, watching. Now my father is dead, someone wants the ledger he left me, and the only man I trust is the one I am not allowed to want. He takes me to a cabin in the mountains with one bed and no signal. He teaches me to shoot. He sleeps with his back to the door and his hand on a gun. And then one stormy night he stops being careful. I come home carrying his child and I say nothing. He notices anyway. When the men who killed my father finally find me, Calder takes a bullet and speaks my name out loud for the first time in six years. Some men protect you with silence. Calder Vane protects me with everything.
