The Road to Forgiveness

The fog comes in off the water the morning the foreclosure notice lands on Blythe Prycestead's bench, and the first person through the door of her net loft is the one man who has no right to stand there. Kellan Rookhaven left her three years ago. He is an Under Wolves patch, he is the reason her daughter has grown up without a father in the house, and he says he has come to fight for the loft her mother left her. Blythe has spent her life mending nets, hooking two fingers into the web and drawing it snug until the knots seat true, and she knows a cheat knot when she sees one. She has no reason left to believe him.

Once, they had everything. A working boat, a small girl named Norah, a marriage that felt like it could take any weather. Then the mill of debt and fear closed around Kellan, and instead of telling his wife, he made a quiet deal with a man named Leandro that put her family's loft up as collateral, and he lied about it for a year. The night she found the papers, he did the one thing that could cut deeper than the lie, and she put him out and cut him from Norah, and told herself the whole net had run.

Now he is back, and he is not asking to be forgiven with words. He sells the bike. He cashes out the one thing he owns. He keeps the fleet's engines running for nothing, fixes the loft roof before dawn, shows up for Norah with no claim on her, and signs the deed back into Blythe's hands, free and clear, expecting nothing. A man cannot buy forgiveness with deeds. But he can show a woman, day after fog-bound day, exactly what he is now.

Blythe has to decide, on her own terms and no one else's, whether a thing that broke this badly can be cut back to sound and mended, or whether some runs go all the way to the end of the net.
