The Road Captain She Shot

Dess Pruitt hauls wrecks. She does not ask whose. She does not ask why. Then she pulls a dying man out of a ditch on Highway 6 and patches him up on her shop floor, and now she has three of them: Cormac, the Sierra Skulls' road captain, shot by his own club; Levi, the attorney who showed up at her gate with a warrant and a lie; and Nash, the kid who keeps looking at Cormac like the man walked off a poster. Cormac is owed something, and Levi is the only one working out who. Nash is the only one who knows where the sniper hid the rifle. Dess used to shoot competitively. She keeps it quiet. When the club comes for all four of them, Dess does not run and does not hide. She loads Cormac into the passenger seat, sends the other two out ahead on two wheels, and drives toward them on the switchbacks. She does not miss.
