The Price of His Billions

Gemma Cranhall can tell gold from the thing that only looks like it. She is a water gilder, second generation, and she has spent twenty years laying real gold leaf so thin you can see light through it, learning by hand the difference between what shines and what has weight. She thought her marriage was gold. She had been living on gilt.

Duncan Bickdale is worth billions, and he built a good part of it on a single page Gemma signed without reading, the year she trusted him most, a page that quietly pledged the one building her father left her against his empire. She finds that out the same week she finds the other woman's key card. The affair is the wound she can see. The signature is the one that took the ground out from under her. By the time the lawyers are done, the marriage is over, the building is his, and the whole town knows.

So Gemma does the only thing that has ever steadied her. She goes back to work. She rebuilds her father's studio, takes the commission no one else can do, and refuses every check Duncan sends, because a woman who can be bought was never really robbed. And Duncan, who can buy anything, finds that the one thing he wants cannot be bought at all. His billions are gilt. If he wants gold, he is going to have to become it, and it is going to cost him everything the money was ever worth.

What follows is not a bidding war. It is a man on a scaffold with ruined hands doing unpaid, uncredited work under her foreman, giving up the company, the tower, the clean name, everything the fortune bought, to earn back a woman who will only take him on her own terms or not at all. And Gemma has to decide whether a thing that was gilt can ever be laid over again in real gold.
