The Long Way Back to Nowhere

Sable Wyckoff has run the family motel outside Kirksville, Missouri, since her mother's stroke, and she has never once let a man stay past checkout — not even the one she loved at eighteen. When the Ozark Disciples book her back lot for a charity rally, their new road captain turns out to be Elias Beaumont, the boy who took her to prom and broke her heart. She says no. He stays in the lobby anyway. Over a long, cold spring of motel paperwork and diner pie, she lets him back in and finally gives him everything she's saved — in room eleven, the room she grew up in. By breakfast, the front-desk printer has produced a photo of Elias in room eleven with a woman named Delia. Sable checks him out, charges him for the room, and cancels the rally. She lists the motel with a broker and moves to Kansas City. Eighteen months later Elias walks into her new office with a signed statement from Delia and a chain-of-custody report proving the photograph was a fabrication. Sable reads every page. She believes him. She still doesn't come home.
