The Ledger of Small Wrongs

In Hallowell, Georgia, every family keeps a ledger of their small wrongs. The lie told. The dollar shorted. The dog hit and not reported. And once a year, on the third Saturday of October, one entry is paid for. Not by the person who wrote it. By whoever was named in the margin — a name the writer never chose and always finds already there. Ellis Ray has been town bookkeeper for two years and has been quietly erasing the worst entries with her mother's eraser. Fourteen so far. The fifteenth will not come off, and the name in the margin is hers. Her mother kept a second ledger entirely in the negative. Its total has never been brought forward. A horror mystery of a town that has never once apologised, and the woman holding the books.
