The Kutte I Cut Down the Middle

Wren Kessler has tattooed half the Cimarron Riders' arms and she knows exactly how a leather patch is supposed to feel in her hands. Six weeks into Tick's presidency, she opens the shop's cash box for change and finds a letter from Amarillo he never bothered to open. Inside: a photo of a woman named Rose. A timeline. A nine-year marriage. A six-year-old kid. Tick's second family, on paper, in his own handwriting. Wren doesn't scream at him. She waits for Friday night. In front of the whole chapter, she takes the kutte they presented him at his patch-in — the one his father paid for — and cuts it cleanly down the middle, then hands both halves to the oldest man in the room. This is not a story about an old lady who comes back. This is a story about a woman with scissors and a plane ticket, and the woman in Amarillo who deserved to know.
