The Guest on the Third Floor

Margaret rents her top floor to a young man who never makes a sound. He pays in cash. He brings the paper up without being asked. He is exactly the tenant she never wanted and now cannot do without. Then a letter appears in his handwriting, dated thirty years ago, signed with her dead husband's name, and Margaret realizes she knows nothing about the person living in her house. But the truth about Theo is not the truth she is afraid of. The truth is what's in the sealed box in the attic, and what her husband owed, and what she has been paying without knowing it for three decades. A quietly devastating, addictive psychological thriller about the ways we let strangers into our lives and forget to count the pills.
