The End of the Line Manager

Sadie Larkin swore she'd never work another register in Hesper, Tennessee. Then she came home thirty-two, dumped, and out of options — and the SaveWell was the only job in walking distance. On her second morning, a silver sedan parks in the employee lot and the district manager walks in: Booker Kwan, khakis pressed, badge laminated, planner color-coded. The last time Sadie saw him, he was seventeen and she was kissing him behind the loading dock before he got on a bus out of town. He's here to shut the store down. Unless the numbers are wrong. They work the back office at night, three laptops and a paper trail, while the town holds bake sales and the assistant manager practices her fiddle in the stockroom. When the audit lands, the store survives and Booker's career doesn't. He has a transfer waiting for him out west. She has one line left to draw: take the transfer, or take her.
