The Editor's Desk

The Aurelian Review is being sold, and the staff group chat has already decided who is getting fired. Priya Raman is twenty-five, junior features editor, and not on the list of people who get to stay. Then the buyer sits in on the Thursday pitch meeting, approves exactly one story — hers — and offers her the editor's chair. One year to prove it is not a mistake. Hollis Grey is fifty-one, unreadable, and has accepted a visiting chair at the same academy where Priya's office is. Two terms. Two nights a week. One very small office. Over one year, Priya turns the magazine into something the industry is afraid of. Hollis turns into the person she calls when a pitch falls apart. In June, the board tells her she has to choose. She chooses the job. She tells him so, in a hotel room in Boston, and waits for him to agree it was the right thing. He does not agree. He does something better.
