The Dragon King's Accountant

Anya Renwick has spent nine years making the Brennus family's casinos, shipping line, and hotels look like businesses instead of a hoard with a banking license. When the patriarch dies at his own birthday dinner, old law hands everything to his youngest son — a man who has lived twelve years in a Montana cabin and refused to shift. Anya is sent to find him. She finds him splitting wood. She also finds that the moment they meet, the hoard-bond snaps taut: she can feel the exact weight of every coin in the vault, and he can no longer lie to her, which in this family is a liability greater than the poisoner. They do the correct, cowardly, actuarial thing: a courthouse marriage, a quiet audit, and a hunt for whoever put ash in the old man's wine. When the rival house moves on Anya in the counting room, Kazimir finally shifts — and takes the roof off. To save the woman he was fated to, he has to give up everything he inherited. Anya has already written the paperwork. She just needs him to sign.
