At the head of that fleet is Kess Vantar mid-40s, born aboard the Ashward, carrying the most refined command of that power that exists anywhere in human space. Thirty years ago she watched a colony tear itself apart in a resource war that never had to happen. She has spent every year since building a doctrine around that grief: that humanity cannot be trusted to save itself, and must, sometimes, be *corrected*.

On the other side of that reckoning is Rian Voss a systems technician on a border station nobody important has ever heard of, a man who reads broken machinery the way other people read faces, and who wants exactly none of what's about to happen to him. When a Hush relic incident brands him with a splinter of the same power Kess has spent her life mastering, he becomes the only person who might be able to stand against her.

There's just one problem. The longer he understands what she's trying to do and why the less certain he is that she's wrong.
