The Chairman He Chose

Ines Duarte has run Delacroix Industries' legal department for four years and has never met the man whose signature is on every filing. When a takeover attempt drags Gabriel Delacroix out of the woodwork, he turns out to be exactly what he sounds like: a figurehead, installed twenty years ago and kept in the dark about his own company. He is not innocent. Ines finds one document with his name on it, from 2004, that closed a safety fund and cost eleven lives in a mine. She brings it to him at two in the morning, expecting him to bury it. He calls a press conference instead. What follows is not romance — it's resignations, a rented office, a storage unit, a defamation suit, and eleven families who agree to meet him and don't forgive him. Only when the inquiry is over, and the findings name the men who really did it, does Ines ask Gabriel what he'll do next. He doesn't know. So she offers him a job.
