The Cartographer

Twenty years Bryn has surveyed the continent for the crown, and in twenty years she has never been asked to map the valley of five winters. Now the queen wants it surveyed. There is no road. There is no need. Bryn rides in anyway, and finds a country whose rivers move when unwatched, whose seasons disagree with the sky, and whose only inhabitant, Aile, has lived there eleven years and does not know a queen, a continent, or the word lost. Bryn begins the map. Then she understands: a place that has never been pictured is only real because no one has drawn it. A finished survey would end the valley — and probably Aile. So Bryn does the one unforgivable thing a cartographer can do. A sweeping epic of a woman who lies to the crown on paper, and tells the truth with her whole life.
