The Cartel Don's Bookkeeper

Lucía Herrera has been running her family's books since she was nineteen. At twenty-nine she is married off to a stranger who runs a port, because he needs a wife with clean paperwork. One month in, she opens a cabinet she was told to ignore, and finds a charity moving money in a direction it should not. The man behind it is her husband's godfather, and he is the one who arranged the marriage. Lucía does not panic. She does not confess. She builds a second set of books, mirrors the godfather's operation, and starves it, one quiet month at a time, until he comes to the table asking for a loan and does not know who is about to sign.
