The Broken Boar's Daughter

Marigold Kessler runs her dead father's tavern on the Lake Michigan shore and has never let a man up the stairs to her apartment. When the Iron Boars send their new sergeant-at-arms to renegotiate the lease, she recognizes Jonah Halloran — the boy who chose a patch over her at nineteen and spent five years in Michigan DOC for it. She makes him pay double. Over one brutal lake-effect winter, she lets him back in and, on the last night of February, lets him take her upstairs. She wakes at five a.m. to a photo from an unknown number: Jonah in a Benton Harbor motel room with the Iron Boars' president's daughter. Goldie doesn't cry. She rewrites the lease, stops speaking to any Boar, and starts night classes in Michigan City. Nine months later, when the Benton Harbor police open a gun case against the club, Jonah walks in with the motel's keycard log and a signed affidavit. The photograph was a set-up. Goldie believes him. Then she tells him the truth: the betrayal wasn't the picture, it was the nine months he knew the club was in the crosshairs and never once told her.
